From futuristic architecture to ancient traditions, Japan is a country of beautiful contradictions. Here, our Creative Director of Womenswear reveals how a recent trip to Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto inspired some of our most stylish Spring/Summer ’16 pieces…

Blossom

“There really is no other place like Tokyo. From the modernity of the Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower to the effervescent colours of Fuji, the city is mesmerising in its scale and visual diversity”

Osaka quote

“I found an amazing vintage fabric store when I was in Osaka, and bought lots of little swatches from antique summer kimonos. This was the starting point for our Graphic Stripe pieces”

Aman Hotel

Where to Stay: Aman Hotel

Inside the 40-storey Otemachi Tower in the bustling financial district, you will find six-floors of serenity and calm. The natural palette of camphor wood and stone, traditional rock arrangements, and sculptural ikebana floral art are all in-keeping with Japanese sensibilities while grand design features ensure this is a hotel that stands out. The dramatic 4,500 sq ft paper lantern that commands the lobby and 30m infinity pool on the 34th floor are a case in point.

Ito-Biyori

Where to Eat: Ito-Biyori

If you like good, clean, organic food then this minimalist gem of a café in Toyonaka-shi is the place for you. Punctuated by a small Jabuticaba in its centre, the décor beautifully nods to the less-is-more idea while trying to bring a little of the outside in. What to order? Any of the homemade cakes and pastries (they’re healthy and delicious). And, in the warmer months, sliding window panels open out onto a perfectly manicured patio and garden. Lovely.

Kinkaku-ji

What to See: Kinkaku-ji

You can’t come to Japan and not visit Kyoto’s famed ‘Golden Pavilion.’ Originally built in 1397, it was later burnt down by a fanatical monk and then re-built in 1955. Now, it sits serenely (as if never disturbed) on a large pond with the gold leaf of its main hall shimmering in its reflection. Our top tip? Go early in the day or just before closing to avoid the crowds. Oh, and try the famous green tea chocolate while you’re there ‒ it’s incredible.
