The Old Stock Inn

Where to Eat: The Old Stocks Inn

You’ll find first-class restaurants on every honey-coloured corner in the Cotswolds, but this luxurious yet laidback eatery – housed in a recently refurbished 17th century hotel ‒ in sleepy Stow-on-the-Wold is our current favourite. While it nods to the new with chic interiors, it boasts bags of classic Cotswold charm (see ‘honey-coloured’ above) and a hearty British menu to boot. From pigeon breast served with granola and blackcurrant to wild boar teamed with black pudding croquette, the menu has as much character as the décor. Plus, Banbury-based wine experts S H Jones have helped curate the wine list, so every dish can be perfectly matched to the right tipple.

Thyme

Where to Stay: Thyme

Southrop’s biggest claim to fame is playing host to Kate Moss and Jamie Hince’s wedding back in 2011, but now there is another reason to visit: Thyme. This picture-perfect retreat ‒ part boutique hotel, part country house ‒ has all the contemporary amenities a modern traveller could wish for. Inside (you can choose from the farmhouse or your own private cottage), you’ll find roll-top baths and sink-into-me beds while outside you’ll find organic gardens, a cookery school and a 150-acre farm. A plus or negative point (depending on how you look at it), is that children under 12 aren’t allowed ‒ meaning a peaceful night’s sleep is 100% guaranteed.

The brainchild of eco-conscientious New Yorker Dan Szor, it prides itself on creating artisanal spirits (they also do a mean single malt) using locally-sourced ingredients ‒ think barley and lavender ‒ from neighbouring farms. With a welcoming log fire, cosy sofas and views out onto an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it’s the perfect place to drink in all the delights of the Cotswolds. Hick…
