What was the starting point for Laboratory Vol. 2?

It all started with a vintage Jaeger photo shoot I came across, which was shot in the British Museum. It was from the 1960’s ‒ the models were in these very modern silhouettes and leaning against the famous marbles. I loved the dichotomy between the modernity and the antiquity. We decided to use the famous architecture of the museum as a starting point for our graphic print, and then contrasted this with technical fabrics, sport details and street style.

Describe the collection in three words…

Textured, sculptural and graphic.

What makes these pieces so special?

It’s a combination of the fabrics ‒ which are texturally rich and mixed in unusual combinations (like couture fabrics mixed with sport jersey) ‒ and the oversized silhouettes.

How has it moved on from last season?

I think we’ve really moved on with the proportions. We’ve been a lot bolder with the sculptural silhouettes.

If we buy one piece, it should be…

The slouchy leather trousers ‒ they’re paper thin and perfectly capture the new season silhouette.

We were brainstorming sporty locations when our art director suggested a skate park ‒ I knew it would be perfect

Tell us a little about the inspiration behind the shoot…

The idea stemmed from the sport detailing on the clothes. Last season, we shot our campaign in an abandoned Victorian swimming pool, and were brainstorming other sporty locations when our art director suggested a skate park. When I saw the textures ‒ from the pressed wood bowl and concrete ramps to the elegance of the marks on the wall ‒ I knew it would be perfect. The photographers (Hart and Leshkina) are a duo whose work our design team are big fans of. They have such a unique, experimental approach to photography that I knew they would capture the clothes in a new and interesting way.

Our current muse is Stacy Martin ‒ she epitomises the cool, edgy urban woman.

Who would you love to see wearing Laboratory?

Our current muse is French-English actress Stacy Martin ‒ she epitomises the cool, edgy urban woman.

What can we look forward to for SS17?

Our next collection is based on the work of a Californian sculptor and really plays with scale and layering. Stay tuned…
