With Silverstone just around the corner, we thought it was the perfect time to round-up some of the world’s most scenic driving routes (and what to pack, naturally)...

The Car: Ford Mustang Twister

California’s cliff-hugging, 123-mile route is the ultimate road trip. Narrow, twisting and with sharp drops down to the crashing surf below, it makes for an exhilarating five-hour (at a leisurely speed) drive. And, of course, it’s incredible. From historic Monterey to jaw-droppingly beautiful Big Sur, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to stop-offs and photo opportunities. Our favourite place? Post Ranch Inn. Pull over for sundowners (one for designated drivers) amongst the clouds.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

The Car: Alfa Romeo Spider

Stretching from Salerno to Sorrento, this winding coastal road is as daring as it is spectacular. First, it snakes through the lush gardens of Ravello (famed for inspiring musicians and artists alike) and the scenic seaside town of Amalfi, before passing the colourful cliff-terraced houses of Positano and Praiano. Disclaimer: this is not for the fainthearted ‒ think sheer drops, sharp bends and daredevil Italian drivers.

The Car: Datsun 240Z

Sprawling national parks, active volcanoes, and rugged coastlines: Japan’s northernmost island is worlds apart from the high-rise buildings and neon lights that most people associate with Japan. Divided into six scenic routes (each as remarkable as the last), you will get the chance to try a smorgasbord of terrains ‒ from brilliant blue lakes and natural hot springs to quaint fishing towns selling the freshest seafood you’ve ever had.

Causeway Coastal Route, Ireland

The Car: Jaguar Roadster

This wild, windswept two-lane highway ‒ flanked by stone cottages, sheep and green-swathed hills ‒ will have you hitting the brakes for Instagram moments every few minutes. Also known as the Giant’s Causeway (it follows the footsteps of the mythical giant Finn McCool), it runs all the way from Belfast to Londonderry. Anything look familiar? Game of Thrones fans may recognise the Shillanavogy Valley or the ‘Dothraki’ grasslands.

Lastly, and by no means least, is a new route on the block. Only a year old, the circular NC500 in the heart of the Scottish Highlands has already been compared to the likes of the Amalfi Coast (see above) and Route 66. Weaving through lochs and mountains, castles and ruins; it’s a thoroughly authentic snapshot of Scotland. Gin-lovers should head (no pun intended) for Dunnet Head, and Britain’s most northerly gin distillery for a wee dram.
