Stay: The Bath Priory

Croquet on the lawn, tea on the terrace, board games in the library: this is the quintessential British hotel. Just a short stroll from the city - through pretty parkland (wellies are a must) - it boasts a Michelin-starred restaurant supplied with fresh produce from its secret kitchen garden.

Caffeine Fix: Colonna & Small's

Where better to get your morning (or afternoon) coffee than from an award-winning barista? Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood - one half of Colonna and Small's - is exactly that, and runs tutorials from the comfort of his contemporary coffee shop. Prepare to be tantalised by the specialised brew bar and tasting boards.

Relax: Thermae Bath Spa

This is the only place in Britain where you can do as they Romans did 2000 years ago and take a dip in natural thermal waters. Our favourite bath is the open-air rooftop pool (fitted with air seats and bubbling jets) complete with breath-taking views over the city. Or, if you don't fancy the chilly run from bath to changing room, nip inside for a tropical shower or relax in one of the aromatic steam rooms.
